What is my child learning? |
¿Qué está aprendiendo mi hijo/a? |
Humans live their lives according to patterns. Mealtimes, school and work hours, and bedtime and wake-up time are all daily cycles that are tied to the pattern of the sun’s position in the sky. As Earth spins, people in different regions experience all the times of day, but not all at the same time.
A child in India will be be asleep when a child in California is having lunch. In this unit, students embark on a study of the patterns that they observe in the sky. Students assume the role of sky scientists helping a young boy named Sai who lives in a place near them in order to understand the anchor phenomenon of the unit: why the sky looks different to him than to his grandma when they talk on the phone. |
Home Investigation: |
Observe the sky with your child at a different time each day for 1 week. Keep a record of what the sky looked like at each time of observation. Your records can be a mix of drawings and sentences. At the end of the week, look back at your record and have a discussion with your child:
1. What did we see in the sky during the daytime? 2. What did we see in the sky during the nightime? 3. Were there objects in the sky that we saw during the daytime AND the nighttime? 4. Why do you think we can see some objects only during the daytime or nighttime, and some objects during both the daytime and nighttime? Next steps: Log into our online library and read the books under the "1st Grade" collection. |
